We set the alarm for this morning with plans to meet Shan and Ana at Ulua
beach for some sun, relaxation and snorkeling. Getting there early really
helped with achieving the nice calm waters we wanted to go out with. We set up
our section in the shade and hit the water. Bobby, hurt his hand in the van
door and wanted to stay on the beach, and Brooklyn agreed. Unfortunately the
calm surface was hiding a murky, low vis, reef. Whichever current changed to
murk up our fabulous visibility of last week is quite annoying. Grant Decided
he would rather sit in the sun with the kids rather than stare at a seemingly
void of fish reef with next to no visibility. Shan, Ana andI decided we would
stay out a little longer and we were certainly happy we did when a Manta Ray
came onto the scene, happily swirling away and eating the murk that we were
cursing moments before.
We swam away from him and continued along the reef, enjoying a visit from a
couple turtles before the manta decided to join us again. I couldn't stand
Grant missing out on the opportunity to see this beautiful open water palagic
creature, so I asked Maddie to swim in and tell her daddy to come swim out to
where I would beekeeping tabs on the ray. It didn't take too long before he and
Brook came out and were amazed by our Manta friend. What a blessing to see
him.
After some sun soaking up we decided to head back to our separate condos
for lunch and meet up a couple hours later for a trip into the west Maui
mountains to the I'oa valley and the I'oa needle. It was a beautiful drive in
and the scenery of the park was amazing. We were able to get some cute shots of
the family and the kids. The valley was the scene of a massive battle with a be
death toll back in 1790 but the gorgeous scenery betrayed nothing of the bloody
past. Several streams all converged and the falls were beautiful. Brooklyn
and Sydney were basking in the attention from Shan and Ana and both were being
silly. Brook tried crawling up the mountain to jump ahead on the path and got a
little stuck with the steep area, once she was rescued Sydney thought she could
take the same short cut but was told no and got pouty that Miss Brooklyn was
being a bit of a show off. Maddie was pretty quiet throughout the walk just
taking it all in.
Shan and Ana wanted to get some shopping done in Kahului and we headed back
to our condo to relax, have supper and hit the pool. The kids were tired from
the day and after a swim went right to bed. Hopefully we can wear them out
again tomorrow.
